Clean Shores Association announces their Spring Clean Event – Port O’Connor, to be held Saturday March 27, 2010. This is an all-volunteer bay and estuary shoreline clean-up event that will be hosted at Froggie’s Bait Dock. Please bring your boat and lend a hand as we rid our bay shorelines of unsightly litter. Heavy duty plastic trash sacks will be provided. We will have volunteers dockside to assist boat captains unload their “catch of the day.” Barbecue and refreshments will be provided starting at 10:00 am.

“Our first cleanup effort was a huge success. A total of 1820 pounds of trash was removed from the shorelines near Port O’Connor on Saturday. Much of it consisted of leftovers from the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. We saw lots of plastic household items, 5-gallon buckets, wads of rope and many plastic water/soda bottles. Seven volunteers manned the three boat ramps in Port O’Connor starting about 6am where we passed out over 100 event bags within a couple of hours. The bags consisted of a flyer outlining the event, a huge 38X60 inch heavy-duty trash bag (donated by BP Chemical-thanks Thomas Barlow) and a fishing line recycling tube provided by the cooperative effort of Sea Grant (Calhoun County Extension Agent Rhonda Cummins) and Seadrift Sail & Yacht Club (Jack LaBarge.) At 10am we rolled in the big pit next to Froggie’s and began serving slow cooked melt in your mouth barbeque brisket sandwiches and refreshments, our cook- Corey Brooks outdid himself. All participants were served as well as anyone who walked up. A donation “bait bucket” was placed near the pit and many dropped greenbacks in to help further the cause. Approximately 10% of the boats who received the bags participated by bringing in some trash at the end of their fishing day. As with any other volunteer effort there are some who go above and beyond and this event was no different. The boat manned by Liz Hewitt, her father and a friend brought in more than 10 bags full of trash. They donated a day for the bay, thanks Liz that was awesome. By 6pm the trailer at Froggie’s was full and the food was all gone, so we officially called it a day. High fives were passed around and everyone involved felt a deep sense of accomplishment. I am very proud of everyone who put forth an effort and will be forever thankful to my friends/family for jumping in to lend a hand when I needed them most. We have begun organizing our next cleanup set for March 27, 2010. Big plans are being made to draw attention to the cause, you’ll be seeing plenty of us in the future. Other coastal areas need our attention, but volunteers are needed to participate during the events, contact me if you are interested in lending a hand.”
